Bronx Community Baptist Church is the Church where Jesus is Lord and Everybody is Somebody!
The History Of Bronx Community Baptist Church 2072 - 2074 Valentine Avenue ~ Bronx, New York 10457 On July 3, 1955 Bronx Community Baptist Church was organized at the home of Rev. Lucien H. Reeberg, located at 1234 Boston Road, Bronx, NY. The members were Mrs. Reeberg, Mrs. Odessa Edwards, Mrs. Estelle Dickens, and Bro. Dickens, Mrs. Gibbs, Mrs. McCory and Mrs. Edna Sloan. A meeting was held to appoint a Church Building Committee. The Building Committee Members were: Bro. Johnnie Edwards, Bro. Ernest Gibbs, Bro. H. Green, Sis. Louis Wright, Bro. Clarence J. McCray, Bro. William Dukes, Bro. McCory and Pastor Reeberg. Soon after a Church building was secured at 1234 Washington Avenue, where many joined and served under the inspiring leadership of Rev. Reeberg. Several deacons were ordained and the church became incorporated. Pastor Lucien H. Reeberg was a faithful servant of the Lord and continued to work faithfully until the Lord call him home on January 5, 1976. Rev. Charles Bryant, who was licensed by the late Pastor L.H. Reeberg and with the assistance of Deacon William Simmons, served as Pastor. The Lord also called Pastor Bryant home on September 18, 1977. Rev. Malone was installed as Pastor of Bronx Community Baptist Church on February 13, 1978. Pastor Marlone ordained Deacon Lloyd Bishop on August 5, 1979, as Chairman of the Deacon Board and Church Treasurer. Pastor Marlone licensed Deacon William Simmons, to serve as an associated Minister to the Pastor, after he preached his trial Sermon on May 25, 1980. Pastor Marlone was called home to the Lord on June 9, 1981; and Rev. William Simmons and the members of Bronx Community Baptist Church carried on the church with the help of the Lord. In January 1982 Rev. Simmons asked Reverend Samuel Green, Jr., an Associated Minister of the Southern Baptist Church, to serve as Pastor. Rev. Green’s reply was, “I will give you an answer after I talk with my Lord Jesus Christ about it.” One month later Rev. Green agreed to become our leader, and was installed as Pastor of Bronx Community Baptist Church on August 22, 1982 at Southern Baptist Church. By the grace of God, Pastor Green’s leadership brought a revival of spiritual, mental, physical, and financial unity among the membership of Bronx Community Baptist church. He renewed the Church’s organization and administration. Pastor Green’s leadership also brought with it a spiritual inspiration of hope, that if we are faithful to Christ Jesus, He will bless us with a church home, where we can serve him in spirit and in truth. With continual prayer to the Lord while searching for a church building; Mr. Carl S. Grierson assisted and secured our current church site on October 17, 1982. Bronx Community marched into our present church home. With the blessing of Christ, the church began to prosper under Pastor Samuel Green, Jr.’s leadership. When God inspired, strengthened, and blessed Nehemiah to rebuild the broken down wall of Jerusalem, the people under the leadership of Nehemiah said, “Let us rise up and build!” Bronx Community took that phase to heart and followed that example. Pastor Green was called home on July 31, 1983. One year later, Rev. John P. Rookard came to Bronx Community to preach at a Sunday afternoon service. The members were so pleased with him they voted to have him installed on October 1985. Pastor Rookard retired from Bronx Community in March of 1998. In May of the same year, the Bronx Community Church family asked Reverend David D. Jenkins to become Interim Pastor for one year. Reverend Jenkins agreed, with the understanding and condition, that his lovely wife Reverend Sheila Shipmon-Jenkins would become his assistant, as he led us on our homeward journey. In January of 1999, the Bronx Community Church family voted Reverend David Jenkins in as the current Bronx Community Baptist Church Pastor. Since His election as Pastor of Bronx Community Baptist Church, Rev. Jenkins has served as a strong spiritual and moral force in the community, promoting the teachings of the Gospel and by setting examples of Christian charity through the initiation of its food program which has truly been a blessing to the community. In 2002, Pastor David Jenkins ordained the church’s 1stReverends, Arnold and Marjorie Batson, under his leadership. In 2005 Pastor Jenkins ordained a host of Deacons including the church’s 1st female Deacon, Monique Stewart who now serves as Co-Chairperson of the Deacon Board along side her husband Andre Stewart. Over the years Pastor Jenkins has licensed and ordained many. Pastor Jenkins was instrumental in the formation of Bronx Community Church Development Corporation, where he serves as Chief Executive Officer. The Corporation, under his direction and leadership purchased our Church Building; the Church’s Annex at 2072 Valentine Avenue and the responsibility as Landlord for 4 apartment rentals. In 2010, the church unveiled it’s remodeled Sanctuary. Pastor and Rev. Sheila have continued to build upon the rich legacy of faith and fellowship and have created a spiritual oasis for the Church members and the community!
